SWAROVSKI OPTIK NORTH AMERICA Partners with Outdoor Afro Founder to Support Biggest Week in Birding Festival

Cranston, Rhode Island – SWAROVSKI OPTIK NORTH AMERICA, a subsidiary of the Austrian-based company, is excited to announce their partnership with Rue Mapp, founder of the social community, Outdoor Afro. As part of Outdoor Afro and SWAROVSKI OPTIKS partnership, Rue will visit and take part in the first weekend of the Biggest Week in Birding Festival.

This year, SWAROVSKI OPTIK NORTH AMERICA has partnered with Rue Mapp of Outdoor Afro to be at the first weekend of the Biggest Week in Birding Festival (May 3rd-5th), enjoying the warblers and representing SWAROVSKI OPTIK. Half the fun of the Biggest Week in Birding Festival in Ohio, is not just taking in the sights of the stunning warblers, but also meeting great people. Rue will be available to speak at the festival about all of her accomplishments, and attendees can learn how to join Outdoor Afro and support this ever growing community.

Rue developed Outdoor Afro, a social community that reconnects African-Americans with natural spaces and one another through recreational activities such as camping, hiking, biking, birding, fishing, gardening, skiing, and more! Rue was recently named a Hero in Backpacker’s Magazine, honored as part of the Root 100 of the top black achievers and influencers for 2012, and received the Josephine and Frank Dunaneck award for her humanitarian efforts.

“To me, birding has two qualities that make it an ideal pastime. The first is that you can go virtually anywhere in the world and see birds, and the farther you go from home, the more interesting the birds are. The second is that learning about birds gives you reason to learn more about the world that the bird lives in – types of trees they nest in, insects that they eat, habitats that they frequent. This leads you to learn the butterflies, dragonflies, plants, windflowers, etc…, that tie all these threads together. When you reach that point, you are never bored when you are walking in the woods,” said Clay Taylor, Naturalist Market Manager for SWAROVSKI OPTIK NORTH AMERICA.

Rue Mapp, founder of Outdoor Afro said, “Birding is such an easy way to engage more people with nature – with SWAROVSKI OPTIK’S support, I am empowered to be a bridge for more communities to experience the connection between birding and an increased awareness of the quality of life surrounding us.”
