Easy to mount on the gun by simply pushing out and replacing the stock pins with the new screws (included). Then push the ergonomic activation button with the index finger and the laser is on target. I got my new Viper HS Scope around the holidays (2011). I make my living in the outdoors and my optics come with me everywhere. If they are not tough and clear, they don’t make it.
I have been using Vortex Razor Spotting Scope for two years and love it. When it came time for a new scope for my elk rifle, I wanted try a Vortex rifle scope and see how it compared. I have had this Vortex Viper HS for a few months. I have not used it extensively in all conditions, but I have put a lot of rounds down-range and I am very impressed.
An unbeatable warranty that I can hunt with.
Very sharp image, even in low light.
I love the resettable 0 turrets, so handy!
Solid, strong, very well built
B.D.C. (Bullet Drop Compensation ) Reticle
Slightly heavier than my old Weaver, but so much better!
I am not a bench-rest shooter; I am a hunter. I hunt rugged country throughout Wyoming. Some of the areas I hunt may be miles on foot or horse into the wilderness. I demand a scope that will not let me down. I have had other scopes fog up after hunting in the snow. When you are in the back country, you can’t run back to the truck to switch out gear. Equipment failure can ruin a hunt.
I believe this Vortex Viper is up to the challenge of fall hunting in the Rockies. I really like a scope that has a minimum zoom of 2.5x. I find this very useful for hunting elk in dark timber, when quick target acquisition, in low light, might make the difference between a full freezer and an empty belly. With the 10x maximum zoom, I feel comfortable taking those longer shots. The 44mm objective lens on the Viper lets in a ton of light. This scope may extend my shooting time by an extra 30 minutes in the morning and evening. The clear, sharp image and the B.D.C reticle have added 150 yards to my shooting range. Other features that I think will be very useful are the windage marking on the reticIe which can be used to accurately estimate range–very useful in hunting situations. I really love how these turrets adjust. They are easy to use and once you are sighted in, you can reset the markers to your own personal zero.
I know there are many good scopes out there. The biggest reason I love this scope is the support I get form Vortex. The lifetime unconditional warranty is unbeatable! Period! Every time I have had a question about a product, Vortex has been friendly and helpful. This scope is the same price or less than other comparable scopes, and Vortex is a U.S,-based company. I highly recommend this scope! Happy hunting and shooting!

GREELEY, CO- In the falcon family, the Merlin is a keen-eyed predator with a unique robustness that makes it an exceptionally effective bird of prey. In the binocular world, the Steiner Merlin has emulated many of the attributes of its namesake, making the Merlin a favorite among birders and outdoor enthusiasts. For 2012, Steiner has upgraded this series with the introduction of the new Merlin Pro line.
These lightweight, compact roof-prism binoculars have been upgraded with several new features and are now available in four models: 8×42, 10×32, 10×42 and 10×50. Birders and wildlife observers will appreciate the rapid target acquisition and close focusing these binoculars offer.
“We think the birding community will be excited about the new Merlin Pro line with its enhanced features,” stated Rob Siemers, general manager. “These binoculars offer features and performance previously found only on binoculars costing twice as much.”
One of the most important upgrades for the Merlin Pro line is the high-contrast optical coatings that ensure brighter images with maximum color fidelity, while minimizing color fringing. Additionally, new twist-up eyepieces with contoured eye cups adjust perfectly to the desired amount of eye-relief for a crystal-clear image with or without eyeglasses. The new, Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) armoring makes the Merlin Pro rugged enough to withstand any weather conditions or rough handling.
Like its predecessor, the new Merlin Pro offers precise center focusing with incredible close focusing capabilities, long eye relief and phase-corrected roof prisms. It is lightweight, fogproof and waterproof. The unique earth-tone brown coloring of the Merlin Pros was specially developed by Steiner to blend into the outdoor environment.
Each binocular comes with a padded travel case, removable neoprene rain-guards for the ocular lenses and objective lens caps, and a padded neck strap for comfortable carrying and viewing at all times.
Available at retailers nationwide the first quarter of 2012, the suggested retail prices for the new Merlin Pro line are: 8×42 – $499; 10×32 – $499; 10×42 – $599; and 10×50 – $699.
