Ruger Introduces New Platform in Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle

Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. (NYSE: RGR) is proud to announce the Ruger® Gunsite Scout Rifle, the ideal “fighting carbine” in .308 Winchester that is a credible rendition of Col. Jeff Cooper’s Scout Rifle concept. Cooper called for a relatively lightweight, hard hitting, do-all rifle that in the hands of an accomplished shooter was able to place accurate, sustained fire out to long ranges, yet was quick-handling and light enough for all-day carry.
Developed in conjunction with Gunsite instructor Ed Head, the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle is a new platform in the Ruger M77® family. While the Scout Rifle has M77 features such as controlled round feed and integral scope mounts (scope rings included), the 10-round detachable box magazine is the first clue this isn’t your grandfather’s Ruger rifle.
“Ruger has taken an in depth look at the intended purpose of a Scout Rifle and developed a full-featured rifle designed to meet the Scout Rifle criteria of hunt, fight, defend,” says Head. “This firearm offers outstanding features in an affordable, versatile and reliable rifle designed to deliver .308 Winchester performance in a variety of situations. It is compact, lightweight, offers 10-round box magazines, can be fit to the individual shooter, and accommodates a host of optics. It is a serious rifle for those serious about rifles.”
The Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle has a 16.5″ medium contour, cold hammer-forged, alloy steel barrel with a Mini-14® protected non-glare post front sight and receiver mounted, adjustable ghost ring rear sight for out-of-the-box usability. A forward mounted Picatinny rail offers options in mounting an assortment of optics – including Scout Scopes available from Burris® and Leupold®, for “both eyes open” sighting and super-fast target acquisition.
A Mini-14/SR-556® flash suppressor is effective on reducing the muzzle flash that may be present on some .308 Winchester loads when fired out of the short (16.5″) barrel. The 5/8-24 muzzle threads allow most standard .30 caliber muzzle accessories – flash suppressors, muzzle brakes, and sound suppressors – to be installed.
The Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle features a matte black oxide alloy steel barrel and receiver on a black laminate stock with sling swivel studs and checkered grip and forearm. A soft rubber recoil pad, with three 1/2″ spacers allows the length of pull to be adjusted and allow the rifle to be properly sized for different shooters, or to give the shooter the proper fit with outerwear or defensive gear of varying thickness. With its compact size and weighing in at just under seven pounds, the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle combines ease of carry and shooting for the serious Scout Rifle enthusiast.
The rifle’s trigger guard and magazine well are formed with glass-reinforced nylon. The magazine release is a push-forward Mini-14 paddle just ahead of the trigger guard. “Gunsite Scout Rifle” is engraved on the grip cap of the laminated, weather resistant stock, and the receiver is roll-marked “Ruger Gunsite Scout”, commemorating the collaboration of Ruger with Gunsite Academy, America’s oldest private firearms training facility.
As they say, beware the man with one gun, for he probably knows how to use it. Never has this been more true than with the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle, the one rifle to have if you could only have one. It is the perfect lightweight, hard-hitting, do-it-all bolt-action rifle – where rugged, reliable Ruger meets the practical, tactical.

By DT Pro Staffer Chad Hines

D.T. Pro Staff dog trainer Chad Hines of Willow Creek Kennels in Little Falls, Minnesota uses a variety of techniques in training hunting dogs. He has found the vibration feature of the D.T. Systems H2O 1820 Collar to be a very effective tool in teaching young dogs.

Here are Chad’s answers to some frequently asked questions from dog owners.

What is Positive and Negative Reinforcement Training?

The famous behavioral psychologist, B. F. Skinner, defines positive reinforcement as an increase in the future frequency of a behavior due to the addition of a consequence immediately following a response. Giving (or adding) food to a dog contingent on his touching the target is an example of positive reinforcement (if this results in an increase in the future behavior of the dog touching the target). Negative reinforcement, on the other hand, is an increase in the future frequency of a behavior when the consequence is the removal of an aversive stimulus.

How do you use Positive and Negative Reinforcement?

The backbone of Willow Creek’s training technique is positive and negative reinforcement. We look to increase the likelihood of a behavior in the future by teaching positive reinforcement and following up with negative reinforcement, albeit mild with the vibrate conditioning.

Nearly all commands are taught with a clicker and a food reward (positive reinforcement). This develops a very consistent, reliable dog by creating the desire for a positive reaction. Although counterintuitive, using the term “negative” in animal training does not mean it is bad. The negative reinforcement can simply mean something is taken away. So when using the DT Systems H2O 1820 collar, the vibration is taken away. We hold the vibration button down and wait until the dog touches the target, help them if needed, then release the button, taking away the mild, effective form of negative reinforcement.

How do you use a Clicker?

We start clicker training puppies as young as seven weeks old. A treat is placed in the hand between the pointer and ring finger, with the middle finger receding to provide backing so the treat does not slip out. This “target” is presented to the pup and we allow him to take the treat from our hand. As soon as the pup touches the hand we “click.” After about 30 repetitions most dogs will be watching for the target very closely. If the dog is not interested in the food reward we can remove morning feedings and train before we feed or find a better food reward. Hot dog slices work extremely well when nothing else seems to elicit interest. We usually use 2-4 sessions, at 30 repetitions per session, before moving on to vibrate conditioning.

How do you use the Vibration Feature?

The trainers at Willow Creek Kennels have found the vibration feature on the DT Systems H20 1820 collar to be very consistent and easy for dogs to understand. As with any new stimulus, it can take a dog a bit to desensitize to the sound and feel of vibration. This sensitivity makes the collar more effective because it mildly annoys the dog and he will try to shut it off. As a human, imagine someone gently poking his or her finger in your arm at the same time asking you to say uncle. If you said uncle, the poking stops. We basically do the same with dogs with the vibration feature. We ask the dog to do something and when they complete the task the vibration stops. Vibrate conditioning goes even quicker when combined with clicker target training.

How Do You Teach Using the Vibrate Feature?

The vibrate conditioning is very simple once we have a dog who is clicker trained to target. The session is started with a clicker target and once we have the dog focusing on the target the vibrate button is held down until the dog touches the target. Vibrate is negative reinforcement, but also becomes a cue that we are asking the dog to recall. The important part of successful negative reinforcement is having a positive stimulus (food reward) come after the negative stimulus (vibrate). Again, we use 2-4 sessions, with 30 repetitions per session. When the dog is proficient with the vibration cue we start adding a verbal whistle, or here cue, before the vibration.

Food rewards and vibrate conditioning can be used to develop and strengthen a variety of behaviors. This concept can be used for sit, whoa, stay, place, conditioned retrieve, kennel, etc. Incorporate vibrate conditioning into your training to develop a consistent, reliable hunting companion.

Ruger Offers Piston Driven Uppers for SR-556 AR Platform

Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. (NYSE: RGR), announces the availability of three, AR-style upper receiver assemblies featuring the innovative two-stage, piston driven performance of the SR-556® family. These rugged and reliable SR-556 piston driven uppers run cleaner, cooler, and are easier to maintain than traditional gas driven systems, offering significantly improved reliability. SR-556 upper assemblies will be available through firearms retailers and ShopRuger.com.
Now all AR owners can enjoy the features of the SR-556 platform, including the patent pending two-stage piston driven operating system that provides a smooth power delivery stroke to the action and vents combustion residue out of the bottom of the gas block. The four-position adjustable gas regulator allows the operator to tune the rifle to specific ammunition and rifle conditions, minimizing recoil and maximizing reliability and long-term endurance. Reliability is further enhanced by a one-piece bolt carrier with an integral transfer key. Designed for long-lasting accuracy, the chrome lined barrels are cold hammer-forged from Mil-Spec 41V45 Chrome-Moly-Vanadium steel.

The standard SR-556 upper chambered in 5.56 mm NATO/.223 features a heavy contour, 16.1″ barrel with a 1:9 twist rate, and is capped with a Mini-14/SR-556 flash suppressor mounted on 1/2-28 threads. A one-piece, ten-inch quad rail handguard provides ample room for mounting sights, optics and accessories. Made exclusively for Ruger, this SR-556-specific handguard is pinned to the upper receiver, creating a near-monolithic upper receiver assembly and providing a rugged mounting system for the piston driven transfer rod.
A carbine-length version of the popular SR-556 two-stage, piston driven AR-style upper is also available. The carbine upper features a heavy contour, fluted barrel that is 1-3/4″ shorter and a half-pound lighter than the barrel on the standard SR-556. The 1:9 twist rate, 16.1″ barrel on the carbine features an integrally machined flash suppressor, which minimizes the overall length of the barrel while complying with ATF regulations for civilian and commercial sales. This carbine version maintains the mid-length gas system and heavy (.850″) barrel contour under the handguard, but the barrel is fluted for weight reduction and to promote barrel cooling.
Those seeking to equip their modern rifle with ample power for hunting medium-sized game or greater muzzle and downrange energy capability for defensive or tactical roles can select an upper chambered in the capable 6.8 SPC caliber. The SR-556/6.8 features upper features a heavy contour, 1:10 twist barrel with a standard SAAMI 6.8 SPC chambering. The chrome-lined, cold hammer-forged barrel is 16.12″ long, is threaded 5/8-24, and is capped with the effective and distinctive Mini-14/SR-556 flash suppressor.
All three uppers are equipped with folding, back-up iron sights. These rugged, high-quality sights co-witness with Mil-Spec optics, and are easily removed or replaced. The sights can be folded down with the push of a button, or quickly flipped up with your thumbs. The windage adjustable rear sight includes an instantly converted short and long-range aperture, and the protected front sight is elevation adjustable.
Durability and performance of the SR-556 is enhanced with the use of high-performance finishes: The barrel and gas block are chrome lined, while the piston, bolt, bolt carrier, and extractor are chrome plated. The piston driven transfer rod is electroless nickel/Teflon coated. The flash hider and the exterior of the barrel, gas block, and regulator are manganese phosphate coated. All aluminum parts are Mil-Spec hard coat anodized.
The SR-556 rifle and carbine uppers chambered in 5.56mm NATO are shipped with three, thirty-round Magpul PMAG™ magazines. These lightweight magazines feature a storage/dust cover, a stainless steel spring, and a self-lubricating, anti-tilt follower. The 6.8 SPC chambered upper is shipped with one five-round magazine and two twenty-five round magazines. Three rail covers, provided with each upper, provide a comfortable ergonomic hold when carrying or shooting. All Uppers are shipped in a padded carry case that features the Ruger logo, hook-and-loop fasteners to stabilize the rifle within the case, and internal magazine pockets.
For more information on the cooler cleaner performing AR uppers from Ruger, or to learn more about the extensive line of Ruger firearms, visit www.Ruger.com. To find accessories for the SR-556 Uppers or other Ruger firearms, visit www.ShopRuger.com.

Steyr Redesigns Its Pistols’ Striker Mechanism For Improved Trigger Pull

TRUSSVILLE, Alabama- Steyr Arms has announced that it has redesigned the Reset Action System mechanism in its popular M-A1 and S-A1 semi-automatic handguns to provide a greatly improved trigger pull. The modification results in a much smoother trigger take-up and a remarkably consistent and crisp break at approximately five pounds.

The redesign incorporates a small pin beneath the rear sight that bisects the striker firing-pin channel. A small roller on this cross-pin allows the striker firing pin to move much more smoothly during the compression phase of the trigger pull. This also allows for a much cleaner break when the trigger mechanism releases the striker firing pin.

Nearly identical in form and function, the M-A1 is the full-size series with a 4-inch barrel, while the S-A1 is the compact series with a 3.6-inch barrel. Chambered in either 9x19mm Luger or .40 S&W, the M-A1 and S-A1 pistols have achieved a great deal of regard among American shooters for their comfortable ergonomics, remarkable safety features, intuitive sighting system, amazing accuracy and extreme reliability.

Both pistol series feature innovative polymer frames that offer shooters unparalleled ergonomics with a high grip and low barrel axis that mitigates muzzle rise as well as an ideal grip angle for a very natural point of aim. The frames include Picatinny rails for mounting illumination and laser-aiming devices. An integrated trigger safety with a Reset Action System trigger requires positive finger pressure to operate the double-action-only design. The striker-fired pistols also incorporate a keyed safety lock.

The suggested retail price for either the M-A1 or S-A1 is $649.

Established in 1864 in Steyr, Austria, Steyr Arms is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious firearms manufacturers. Steyr’s comprehensive lines of premium hunting rifles, precision sporting and tactical rifles, and striker-fired handguns are technically mature, and their subtle elegance also communicates the harmony between appearance and substance. Steyr’s legendary SBS actions and cold-hammer-forged barrels are distinctive and unparalleled. Steyr Arms is also the U.S. importer for Merkel firearms and Anschutz precision rimfire sporting rifles.
